Litir Chumhdaigh

John and Deirdre O'Connell

We have been contributing to the debate on the Naas Inner Relief Road, latterly Gallops Avenue, since it first appeared in the Draft Development Plan 1999. It was originally proposed to run it along the existing road from the Dublin Road main entrance to the racecourse and out the Tipper Road entrance. On objection by the Racecourse, it was proposed to move it across towards Woodlands and run it along by the back boundaries with Woodlands Houses 1 to 24. This appeared to be an arbitrary ditching of the original plan, which allegedly was the optimum solution on the grounds of route selection and cost. The proposed re-routing would be very damaging to the environment of Woodlands residents and was met by vigorous objection. Thus began the saga of the Naas Inner Relief Road. It is debatable if the plan and slight deviations proposed since would have provided the desired traffic relief in the area at the time but now, 20+ years on, it is completely outdated.

Ábhair:

As residents of Woodlands, who will be affected badly by the proposal for Gallops Avenue (formerly Naas Inner Relief Road), we wish to make a submission on the part of the Plan covering the aforementioned Gallops Avenue.

We object to the inclusion of 'The Gallops Avenue' In the plan (Chapter 5 and Table 4) - Priority Road and Bridge Projects. This road proposal will not address the transport and movement needs of the county. Furthermore, it does not have the support of the majority of residents of Naas as evidenced by the many thousand submissions on the various Local Area plans over the years. This road proposal was democratically defeated in 2019 by Naas Councillors (6 to 1 votes) who are on the record in Naas MD Council minutes as stating this road proposal is outdated and not fit for purpose. It is entirely unacceptableto disregard this democratic decision and continue the attempt to include in county development plans. The proposed Gallops Avenue road must be deleted from the Plan.

Yours Sincerely,

John and Deirdre O'Connell
