1. Introduction and Context

Ábhair:
  • reference to 50% of bogs for development is wrong and will lead to further habitat destruction, fundamental alteration of the hydrological integrity of the peatland, diminish water quality and increase the risk of flooding. The submission of Inland Fisheries Ireland, The Public Participaton Network and the National Peatlands Park Group are fully supported in these respects.
  • Kildare has no Special Amenity Area Orders for wetland or peatland sites. This is within the gift of the Council and should be done without delay starting with areas such as Harristown Common, Lullymore-Allen Bog Group where there is aleady a wealth of scientific data. This should be a specific new action in the County Development plan
  • Cooperation with the EPA, NPWS, LAWPRO, IFI, Teagasc, Dept of Agriculture and the Council should be improved by establishing a Water Quality Task Force to decide who does what, drive compliance with the Water Framework and Habitats Directives and inter alia eliminate fly tipping into our rivers, bogs and streams and ensure riparian zones are protected with 30 m setback to prevent point source pollution from ruminants and mitigate nutrient run off.
  • The committment to set aside 80% for biodiversity and nature recovery in post industrial extractive industry sites is welcome.
