Part 8 Proposed Sallins Grand Canal Greenway Link

Dear A/Senior Executive Officer

‘Part 8 Proposed Sallins Grand Canal Greenway Link’

Firstly, I would like to commend Kildare County Council (KCC) for the work they have done thus far on the Grand Canal Greenway Phase 1 Sallins to Alymer Bridge.  It is a top class amenity for locals and visitors to enjoy.

However, I would like it noted that I am surprised at the fact that there was no Traffic Impact Assessment carried out for this proposed development.  As a regular user of the roads leading to, and from Sallins, I am extremely familiar with the acute traffic congestion in the village.

Therefore, I completely oppose the proposed Removal of existing vehicular ramp and provision of pedestrian only ramp and reinforced concrete retaining walls to connect Canal View shared space to R407 shared space.  I also vehemently oppose the Closure of vehicular ramp at R407 junction with Church Ave. By closing off the access to the Kerdiffstown Road from the R407 on the Canal Bridge, you are forcing all traffic down through Chapel Avenue. Chapel Avenue is a narrow road with acute corners.  It is the road on which a playground,  a Church and a community centre are located.  Most importantly, it is the route to Sallins National School.  Forcing all vehicles onto Chapel Avenue will naturally lead to a massive back log of traffic from both Naas and Clane directions on the Main R407.

Closing off the vehicular ramp to the Sherlockstown Road will have similar repercussions on traffic flow leading to further congestion and backlogs on the Main R407. The acuteness of the turn onto the Sherlockstown Road from the Naas direction is dangerous.

For the record, I would like it noted that I truly believe this proposal to close both vehicular ramps will greatly increase the serious risk of injury to life and limb.

In addition, I completely oppose the proposed Removal of 4 no. parking spaces along Osberstown Road to facilitate a 4.0m wide shared space and the proposed Removal of 20 no. parking spaces along Canal View to facilitate a 4.0m wide shared space along southern side of Canal View

I oppose the removal of these 24 car parking spaces for a number of reasons, namely;

The recent health check workshops carried out in 2023, clearly indicated the essential need for parking spaces along both sides of the Canal and Chapel Avenue. These on street car parking spaces are a necessity for residents and local businesses.  With over 90 residents living in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development works, it is imperative that KCC give due consideration to the impact that the removal of these 24 spaces will have on the daily lives of these residents and businesses.

My third and final objection is that I wish to state that I am completely opposed to the proposal to make permanent temporary closure of western end of Church Avenue to enhance the public realm environment for the village community.

Since this corner has been closed to members of the public, on a trial basis, it has caused huge congestion in the area, especially at peak times. It appears to be completely illogical to close off a road which necessitates vehicles to slow down to a snail’s pace in order to turn around the acute angled, narrow corner.

Therefore, I would be grateful if you would take into consideration my objections.
