Sallins Amenity Master plan

Sallins GAA welcomes the publication of the ‘Sallins Amenity Land Master plan.’ There is a clear and obvious requirement for additional sporting amenities in Sallins. The proposed amenity plan looks very comprehensive and the inclusion of two full size GAA pitches is much needed and will help alleviate the pressure on Sallins GAA with the growing numbers.

Sallins GAA is the largest sporting organisation in Sallins and fields teams across Football, Hurling & Camogie codes and with seven hundred members will utilise the pitches throughout the year.

The club’s primary and over-riding requirement with the ‘Masterplan’ is the timescale for its implementation. We would ask County Council to expedite the plan with some urgency.

A number of areas need to be considered in order to maximize the use of the lands and ensure it is as inclusive as possible:

• The proposed Astro pitch is labeled “full size soccer pitch” and suggests it will be for exclusive use for soccer only. Can this be relabeled as “community all weather pitch” to ensure it is available for all the community of Sallins to enjoy. It is noted that the correspondence attached to the plan (Part 8) indicates that there is to be 2 natural grass soccer pitches, 2 natural grass GAA pitches and an All-weather pitch and accordingly be used for both sports

• It would be beneficial if floodlights were available on the All- Weather pitch and both GAA pitches to maximize the usage of them during winter months.

• Could you include netting (6 meters high x 15 meters wide approx.) to go behind the goals of the GAA pitches to stop balls spilling into the areas behind the pitches. These ball nets are used at most GAA pitches and prevent unintended accidents caused by flying footballs and sliotars.

• Also, there is a viewing area behind the goal posts on the GAA pitch and this may cause an issue during games as spectators are generally not permitted to stand behind goals. Could this viewing area be moved to the centre of the 2 GAA pitches to allow viewing access to both pitches.

• There will be a requirement for changing rooms. It is requested that the Sports Hall will provide such Changing Rooms/Showers.

• There will be a requirement that the Changing Rooms/Showers will be available both in the evening and at weekend

• Ideally there should be storage facilities beside the GAA pitches to allow for storing junior portable goals and nets.

Well done on the plan and it would be great to see the suggested changes accepted and included in the full plan for the park. Sallins GAA as always is available to discuss any element of the plan going forward.
