dog park please

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

Many thanks for the work undertaken so far which is very much appreciated.  I would like to make a submission for an enclosed dog park please.  There has been a very significant rise in new dogs and dog owners in Sallins during the past two years because of continuous lockdowns and extended families obtaining a pet.  This is set to increase as new residential developments will bring additional dogs.  A large, enclosed dog area is required to enable dogs to run off leash and to avoid using estate and other village areas.

With the Greenway being built through Sallins, there will be an increase in pedestrians of all ages including families and babies in buggies, cyclists, walking and cycling groups, including large groups, etc.  Cyclists will be using the Greenway to cycle on as they do now but only in a higher volume in the next few years.  Dogs need an area that is safe for them to run and preferably away from other canal users.  Dogs constantly on a leash become frustrated and cause anti-social behaviour such as pent-up energy resulting in noise, excrement and this affects dogs, dog owners and estate residents.

Dog owners in Sallins represent a very large community group which appears to be on the increase.  Dog owners travel from various environs in County Kildare to exercise their dogs here.  By enabling dogs to be free in an enclosure, owners can safely exercise their dogs and themselves.  Dog owners use the time while exercising their dogs to exercise themselves and this has proven positive mental and physical health benefits.  Owning a dog and exercising with other dog owners is an invaluable resource for ongoing Covid and other stressful occurring global and national issues .  An enclosure is a resource to encourage dog owners to be responsible regarding looking after their pet by exercising and cleaning up after the dog.  The enclosure also encourages dog owners to meet and provides a much-needed social outlet for such owners.  This in turn feeds into the local economy.

The majority of families in Sallins own a dog and there is a mix of very large dogs to small dogs in the Sallins and neighbouring areas.  It would be very beneficial to all of Sallins residents if a large area (larger than the enclosure in Corcaigh Park please) is provided in order to keep dogs safe, people safe, avoid collisions with bikes, etc, on the Greenway and other accidents.  Currently, dog owners exercise their dogs throughout the day from early morning until late in the evening and have been using the current amenity lands for a substantial period of years with no issues whatsoever either to Sallins’ residents or other community groups.  As there have been no other community groups using this land for the past few years, apart from evenings and at weekends during the GAA sports period when GAA training and matches occur, it would be very much appreciated if a good size portion of the amenity lands could be retained for dogs as is currently the system in use.  A smaller dog area would not suffice.

The removal of the two planned water features would free up some of the amenity lands to enable land for pitches as well as retaining a dog enclosure.  We have the canal and the Liffey either side of the amenity lands and do not need further water features.

A happy dog equals a happy owner, family, neighbours and less accidents, noise and mess!

Thank you for your consideration and kind regards.
