Corbally Canal & Liffey Corridor Enhancement Project
Kildare County Council is undertaking a public survey so that you can help us develop our understanding of the Corbally Canal between Naas and Corbally Harbour, and the River Liffey corridor between Newbridge, Athgarvan and Kilcullen, and the way that it might be developed in the future as a recreational project.
Kildare County Council is exploring the potential for the provision of a recreation trail between Naas, Newbridge and Kilcullen via the Corbally Canal and the River Liffey Valley. The “Corbally Canal” between Newbridge Road and Corbally Harbour extends over c. 8 kilometres and the River Liffey between Newbridge and Kilcullen extends to c.10km between Newbridge Bridge and Kilcullen Bridge. If developed, this would provide a recreational amenity of scale that would be to the benefit of Naas, Newbridge Athgarvan, Kilcullen and the wider area. The Corbally Canal and Harbour area itself also has the potential to be developed as a Blueway if it meets strict criteria.
Work on a Feasibility Study has commenced with JBA Consulting and this will be completed in 2025, which will evaluate the opportunity and deliverability of the proposed recreational project.
The project is supported by the Department of Rural and Community Development’s Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS), which provides for the detailed development of projects with the objective of providing for new outdoor recreational infrastructure and/or the enhancement of existing outdoor recreational infrastructure to contribute to healthy active lifestyles. It also supports the economic and tourism potential of the area for both local communities and tourist visitors alike. The development of any proposal will take account of a broad range of considerations, including biodiversity and environmental quality.
Tell us what you think
Public engagement is an important aspect of this project. Kildare County Council is seeking to gather information and the views from people who live, visit or work in the Naas, Newbridge, Athgarvan and Kilcullen areas. The Council is launching an on-line survey to hear from as many voices and opinions to help us understand your own recreational interests and how this amazing landscape could play a part in the future!
